Traditional Swedish handicraft

Traditional Swedish handicrafts for carving Dala horses are made from pine wood. They are a popular souvenir of Sweden. Because these carvings are handcrafted, each horse's size and shape will be slightly different from the others. Some enthusiasts believe that only Dala Horses produced in Nusnas have authenticity. Anders Henriksson sold Dala Horses from Nusnas starting in 1926. His sons, Nils and Jannes Olsson, a couple of schoolmates, began helping their big brother. They eventually took up this tradition seriously and opened a small workshop.

The original design for the Dala Horse is derived from the Biblical story of Jonah, who used a wooden horse to ride in the desert. The carved wooden horse was painted in rich colors and adorned with floral designs. The wooden horse became popular in the 19th-century. Dala Horses were made with wood scraps, paint-pigment, and long winter nights. Woodsmen and soldiers have different traditions when carving Dala horses. By the 1870s, they were painted with brightly colored designs and wore flower-patterned saddles.

Origin

The art of painting Dala horses is very old and is known as a Swedish tradition. The style is rooted in Swedish furniture paintings. This intricate ornamental style was commonly used on furniture between the seventeenth to eighteenth century. These paintings were most often done by wandering painters from Sweden's Dalarna region. Since then, the art of painting Dala horses has become popular worldwide.

Many stories are told about this tradition. It may be dated back to the 15thcentury when foresters in central Swedish towns carved fire-breasted horses. Swedish furniture makers used slow-growth pine from Dalarna forests for many years. Also, it is possible that leftover wood was used. While there is no definitive evidence, the Dala horse tradition continues to this day. This horse has been made a national symbol for Sweden.

Size

A Dala horse is a traditional toy with distinct features. The size and shape of a Dala horse vary, and there are many different types. There are many sizes available, including stocky, lean, and medium-sized horses. These beautiful creatures originated in the Mora village of Dalarna, Sweden, and they are popular worldwide. They were originally carved by Swedish woodcutters in their spare time, away from the responsibilities of their daily occupation. The Dala horse is one the most durable and longest-lasting wooden toys.

Although Dala horses are widely popular in Sweden, they had little recognition outside of Sweden until 1939 when a 2.5-meter model was displayed outside the Swedish pavilion at the World Exhibition in New York. The Dala Horse was loved by so many people that they were sent to America in 1940. Today, Dala Horses are primarily orange and red in color, but they can be painted any color, or left plain. The Avesta Municipality, Sweden displays one of largest Dala Horses.

How To

How do I accurately measure wood?

There are many methods for measuring wood. We use a variety of methods to measure wood.

Two jaws can be opened and closed on a digital caliper. The first jaw holds the object, and the second measures the distance between them. The digital scale is perfect for measuring tiny distances such as wood thickness.

Laser levels are equipped with an infrared light beam, which projects a line across a floor. The laser emits red dots on the line. By looking down the line, you can see whether the surface is even or not. For large surfaces, laser levels are the best way to check their accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. There is a bubble at the center of this device. As long as the bubble remains centered, the device can tell you if the surface has been leveled. The bubble levels can be used to check the accuracy of smaller areas.
