How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood can be described as a process where chemicals are applied to the wood surface. This causes the wood to take on a new color. This chemical reaction causes the wood color to change from white and brownish red. Oak is the most commonly used wood for staining, but other woods can also be stained.

There are several ways to apply stains to wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Other methods use a solution of water and dye applied directly to the wood. You can mix stains into varnishes or paints to make them part of your finish coat.

Preparing the wood surface is the first step to staining it. Clean the wood to get rid of any grease, dirt or other substances that might be detrimental to the stain's application. Sanding can smoothen out scratches and uneven spots. The next step is to determine the type of stain you would like to use. There are two basic kinds of stains: penetrating stains and non-penetrating stains. Penetrating stain penetrates deeper into wood than nonpenetrating, making them suitable for dark colors like mahogany. The best non-penetrating colors are those that work with light colors like maple.

Once you have decided on the stain type that you want, get your tools ready. Because you can spread the stain evenly with a paintbrush, it is ideal for applying them. A few rags are also handy to clean up any spillages after you have finished painting. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared the materials, you can clean the area where you want to stain the wood. You can remove grime and dirt with warm water and soap. Wipe the entire piece of furniture with a rag dampened with clean water. Make sure you eliminate any loose debris, especially if you plan to stain darker wood.

Apply the stain next. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. Be careful not to let the stain drip off the wood's edge. Before moving on to the next steps, allow the stain drying completely.

Protect the painted surface with a coat polyurethane paint sealant. Apply three coats polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight, before sanding.
